While the Census Bureau releases decennial census results in a variety of media, the most comprehensive release is through a series of computer files, called Summary Files (prior to 2000, Summary Tape Files). The 2000 Census has been covered by a series of four Summary files [for a description of summary data and details on the content of the 4 files see our Users Guide. Summary files are released on a State basis. This means that each State file in the 4-file series contains the full set of tables for the complete range of geographic units that are appropriate to that file. For example: SF1 for Michigan contains data tables for all geographic units from the State totals down to individual blocks, from Alcona County to Wexford County. While a user can download the complete State file from the Census Bureaus web site, we realize that many users have specific geographic interests that need to be culled from all the other unnecessary geography. Perhaps the need is only for census tract data across the State, or MCD data in Southeast Michigan. MIMIC has learned first hand that this need exists and is trying to meet it with a set of geographic extract files that we have developed. We have chosen to work with the most widely used files SF1 and SF3 in 2000 (STF 1 and 3 in 1980 and 1990) and deliver an extensive set of geographic layers. Follow the directions below to see what is available. Let us know what other files, or geographic subsets, you would like to see added. Begin by selecting a data file below. You will then be asked to select a geographic type (e.g. county) and a geographic area (e.g. Michigan). Click here for more information about census geography. The navigation bar below will show you where you are and allow you to move among geographic type, geographic area and the list of data files.
